Good morning Miami! The air is lushious, the sun is sweet and warm...
It was a smooth touchdown here last night, so after a day of flying across the States,
dmarie and I are anxious and ready to dive into the madness of the weekend. We've invaded
the Bethel Beach condos On Collins and 88th -- which are a bit farther away from the
center of the conference hotel and clubs than we had planned -- but we're not complaining
'cause the company couldn't be better. The Phunckateck crew is here in full effect --
Laura (Sage), Ed (UFO!), Neil (Juju), Noel, Chris (Echo) and Alex (Abstract) with Reza,
and Ronnie. Mehdi will be coming through later and we'll probably see Eric (E-sassin) at
the club tonight.
We were delighted to fly here in the company of Pauly, Stephen and their ladies from
X-Radio, plus Maneesh and Jason from Mixman. I spotted house music dons Mark Farina and
David Harness as well. SF REPRESENT!!
Today we'll probably cruise around the central conference hotel, the Fontainbleu, where
there is a beach gathering and propably lots of heads registering and connecting. Felix
the Dog is here and our happy little fam is together! Nothin' can stop us, now.
Tonight I've got my eye on one stop, make no mistake!! Check out this line-up:
TRACE, FIERCE, OPTICAL, RYME-TYME, KARL K of the brand new DSC14 + Virus Recordings UK
E-SASSIN of Sound Shere Recordings, Los Angeles
MR.MENDEZ, ELEMENT & ROXANNE of Evilbase Recordings, Miami
DOM & ROLAND of Moving Shadow Recordings
UFO!, SAGE, NOEL, ABSTRACT @ JUJU of Phunckateck, San Francisco
AK1200 of Moonshine/artistic
SLANT, STRESS, MC MECHA & MC NES of 2Tuff, DC
and more, including
SIFU & HONEY B of Thermal Recordings, San Francisco
PRESHA of Subtronix, New Zealand
MC ? of Science, Los Angeles
Need I say more? Stay tuned for the report, yo...
Peace out +E=

Monday in Miami
"It's runnin', mate!"
The weekend has passed and yet it seems as if this has all just really begun. Our Saturday
and Sunday nights were full of kind sound systems, sick beats and strong drinks. What a
concept to actually be able to stay out at the clubs past 2:00 AM! Our San Francisco crew
is diggin' it like that! We're getting spoiled.
The Saturday night soiree hosted by Miami's Evil Base crew was excellent. Zanzibar was a
teeny, tiny joint with HUGE BASSBINS in the main area which only fit about 50-75 people at
the most. Phunckateck's set was short and sweet, they dropped all of their latest
home-grown trax. Optical stepped up after Abstract and infiltrated the lab with some
mind-twisting bass and breaks with the smooth one MC Rhyme Tyme on the mic. The patio was
smokin' all night with the musical talent of Sifu from Thermal Recordings and other drum
'n' bass DJs representing from around Florida and the East Coast.
San Francisco is makin' a lot of noise around these parts, let me tell you! There are so
many of us here, I feel right at home. It is amazing to see everyone representing their
labels and crews, all styles and all flavours of electronic music, from all around the
world. This trip is an endless discovery of old familiar faces from the Bay Area as well
as new bright stars.
I feel like I'm on this endless blind date, looking to connect with people that I've
spoken to for months. We hardly have a clue as to what each other looks like! The two
people dmarie and I were excited about meeting the most were Coretta and Mihai, who we're
working with in promoting national drum 'n' bass tours like the Kung Fu Knowledge Tour
coming around this spring. We finally met them both Sunday night at the Cameo Theatre
where the Urb party was is full swing. Coretta worked it to get us in the door, so we slid
in alongside Dazee and some of the other Bristol heads just in time to catch DJ Craze's
peformance. If you have not caught this boy in action you are really missing out!
SKILLS!!! Mad skills!
Mihai caught dmarie and I in the crowd later, says he heard my voice and saw her hair! He
and Coretta are stunning, really, so beautiful. The boys Jesse and Perry from Jungle
Massive Television were there at the show as well, we'll be working to promote more jungle
bizness with them all throughout in North America this year.
Sunday night we travelled down the streets with Felix and Qzen -- buzzing with
anticipation -- hopping from one club to another. We stopped off at an event hosted by the
Dune Recordings crew from Montreal. DJs Dara and DB from NYC aligned the jungle rhythms in
the back patio of the Lava Lounge which is a roomy venue with another great soundsystem.
Felix the Dog brought in the Freak City TV crew with him to capture interviews with Dara
and yes, the ENTIRE Phunckateck posse. It was a major media spectacle, with us filming the
film crew and flash pictures going off every 2 seconds. Jungle music has never been
represented on Freak City so we're excited at the possibility of our San Francisco talent
being highlighed.
The next step, ya'll...
Monday has been a chilly, partly rainy day. We took a trip down to the Fountainbleu for
some afternoon drinks, to catch up with friends and to get the word on the evenings
festivities. Watching all of the industry sharks on attack-mode by the pool is
entertainment in itself! The nighttime club action is where it's really at.
Tonight we'll be checkin' out the spread at the "Miami Vice" mansion and will be
tuning into the West Coast Massive night back at Zanzibar. Until then...

March 17, 1999 In the air somewhere...
Tuesday was a bright, warm day. I hit the streets down in South Beach to rendevous with
Coretta and some of the Kung Fu Knowledge heads at the MAC store where DJ Dazee was
rollin' out a techy soundtrack that could be heard within a few block radius! I had a
chance to connect with Rachel who runs Knowledge Magazine back in the UK. She and the main
editor Colin checked out a seminar earlier that day at the conference on DVD media -- a
concept of digital, interactive publishing that's going to take their work on into the
21st century.
It's been so interesting to communicate with people like them who have been instrumental
in building the drum 'n' bass scene, who can testify for its evolution throughout the
years. Rachel acknowledged an enthusiasm in me that reminded her of when she, Dazee and
their Bristol crew were just starting out. What keeps them in it is sharing the good word
and rediscovering that sense of new, fresh vibes over and over again, working to spread it
across the globe.
Drum 'n' bass culture is deep rooted and is finally ready to pop off here in America in a
big way, becasue we're taking it there! Original Stateside players are taking what's been
tested, tried and true for the UK heads and are giving it a serious twist. There are
infinite styles brewing in the worldwide underground that will keep the culture runnin'
strong for generations to come. It's not owned by any One.
Tuesday evening's hours slipped by with lightspeed. A melodic San Francisco vibe called me
so I travelled to the South Point where the organic, soulful house rhythms of Dubtribe
transmitted the sunset groove for a small gathering nesteled in the palms on the beach.
Mmmm, mmmm..... Sunshine, Moonbeam and crew are set to stir it up on a worldwide tour,
celebrating their indie release of their new full-lengeth album.
Sunset merged with darkness and the buzz on the street grew louder. In my nervous shuffle
to prepare for my set at the Kung Fu Knowledge night, I left my digital camera behind. The
light & spice of our last night in Miami is a story that was meant be told with only
our words and through the eye of our trusty V-cam -- the motion, the faces, the tricks and
the trade. The music still speaks for itself...
There were crazy antics all around at the kick-off of the North American Kung Fu Knowledge
Tour. The Lava Lounge heated up as the night progressed with some Stateside playaz rollin'
out the beats, including Machete from Junglist Platoon, Ezra, and Daniel of Moontribe plus
yours truly and DC's 2Tuff crew out on the patio under the stars. We checked the UK sounds
of Deep Rooted of No U Turn and Metalheadz' Dom & Roland takin' over inside, then
dmarie, Qzen and I bounced over to the XLR8R Paraffin party just a few doors down with
Mihai and DJ Craze for his set at 2AM. On the patio there, Funkstorung's minimal techno
styles filled the air and I ran into none other than A Guy Called Gerald! It absolutely
made my night to, by chance, meet this man and get to thank him for sharing his visions of
music. He snuck up close to the front with me to catch Craze's turntable wizardry, and
then he jumped on the wheels for a sweet set of breaks & bass. He told me he just
signed on with !K7 so we'll be seeing more of his music being released domestically in
1999.
After checkin' EZ Rollers inside for a minute I bounced back to the Kung Fu party where
heads were raving about DJ Firece's set. Dieselboy came on with the MCDub2, who together
have just completed a tour around the nation with Tech Itch and Decoder (we hosted them at
Eklektic two weeks ago). We cheered on our main lady DJ Dazee and Craze closed it out the
session with some soulful hip hop grooves. Smooth...
Everyone spilled out onto the street and raided the nearest pizza joint. I ran into
old-school friends of mine who I grew up raving with in LA, and caught my last glimpses of
the faces I probably won't see for many months to come. dmarie and I cruised back to the
hotel this morning around 6:00AM after a full evening of musical adventures and mayhem. I
grabbed the digital cam, snapped a picture of the sunrise over our balcony and
sighed...completely overwhelmed. We were overdosed by the neverending rush of anticpation
and excitement which flowed throughout our long weekend.

<<<<<<<<<<<<<
When we layed down to shut our eyes, our room filled with sun and we giggled, thinking
about our afternoon plane ride back to San Francisco. What are we going to do with UFO! to
ourselves for a whole 5 hours? Thank Goddess we've got another 120 minute video tape
left!!
*CATCH YA ON THE FLIP*
