Digital Be-In #12
January 12, 2002 at Studio Z (Transmission Theatre), 314-11th Street, San Francisco, CA
Now in its 12th year, the Digital Be-In is a unique San Francisco-based event - the original cyberculture "gathering of the tribes" inspired by the January 14, 1967 Human Be-In - that showcases creative and humanistic applications of digital technology. The Be-In brings together and celebrates the international community of people and groups whose work with technology is transforming our society in many positive ways. The Digital Be-In is where social conscience, art, spirit and human evolution enter the high tech dialogue.
With a theme of "Media Revolution," the 12th Digital Be-In addresses the state of new media and possibilities for global social evolution through intelligent use of new media tools. Previous themes have included Freedom of Speech on the Internet, Human Rights in Cyberspace and Cultural Diversity on the Net. At this year's Be-In we will be exploring how the Internet and digital media can actually deliver the tremendous communications, news gathering/reporting, and educational breakthroughs that inspired the creators of new media systems from early on. To do this, we must "think outside the box" and move beyond the constraints of our obsolete systems to design non-commercial news and product information delivery, many-to-many publishing, on-demand training and education, and other advanced applications and systems. Digital Be-In 12 will feature speakers and exhibits addressing these issues.
EXHIBITION: The Digital Be-In is a place where artists and techno-inventors showcase creative and humanistic applications. In addition, each event features groups associated with certain social causes, this year focusing on media awareness.
MEDIA REVOLUTION CAMPAIGN: The Digital Be-In each year focuses on a theme, or launches a campaign (such as the EFF Blue Ribbon Campaign in 1988). This year's campaign is "Media Revolution," calling for new media Awareness, Alternatives and Activism - toward the rapid development of a more balanced, effective "many-to-many" mass media system.
NETWORKING SALON: With both the technology and art fields experiencing a recession the Digital Be-In will support networking, on-site and online, featuring a Networking Salon from 7 pm to 8 pm the night of the event with a roundtable discussion with Craig Newmark, founder of Craig's List , Sylvia Paull of Gracenet and Kenya Briggs of the National Writer's Union Job Hotline .
PRESENTATIONS AND ENTERTAINMENT: Personalities, visionaries, live music acts, performances, dance party.
WEBSITE AND NETCAST: The 12th Be-In will be netcast live, and will endeavor to tie-in remote locations and events. The website will be a nexus of information and links relevant to this year's theme.

New media technologies promise profound changes in how global citizens obtain news and feature programming, as well as how we communicate among ourselves and contribute to the emerging "many-to-many" mass media system.
Digital Be-In 12 is launching the Media Revolution campaign to highlight media Awareness, Alternatives and Action.
1) Awareness: understanding how mass media news and television programming is controlled and subject to biases stemming from centralized corporate ownership and political forces
2) Alternatives: choosing among the growing number of alternative media experiences as a counterbalance to pervasive, ommercially-biased media.
3) Action: using the tools of change and evolution - email, mailing lists, web-based publishing, intelligent "push and pull" media usage vs. passive media consumers
