Luminous Orbs Hover Over Brooklyn
A short and sweet account of UFO action in the city that never sleeps, by Radio-V reporter Robert Pheonix.
On DJ Spookys latest record, Riddim Warfare, Kool Keith raps about sighting UFOs in Brooklyn on "Object Unkown". Well in the post-modern world of synchronistic occurence, Alex Cavallari, New York state director of Skywatch International, spotted a luminous red-orange sphere in the sky above his Sheepshead Bay home in Brooklyn. Before the object disappeared Cavallari managed to get several shots of the luminous orb. "It looked as big as the moon," he added.
What occured after the object departed was almost as curious. Cavallari was washing up in his house when he heard the sound of a helicopter over the house, "I went and got the camera and walked out onto the back porch. There was what looked like a black helicopter hovering directly over my house at about 1,500 to 2,000 feet.">
After a few moments, "the helicopter turned and dipped its front end as if it were looking at me. It hovered in this postion for about thirty seconds and then headed toward the same direction as the UFO sphere/orb," Cavallari said.
The Skinny on the Red Planet
Increasing focus on possibilities of past and future life on Mars -- the most political piece of real estate in the solar system outside of Jerusalem -- points to adventurous efforts to transform transportation technology and more! Check this report from Radio-V reporter Robert Phoenix.
Life On Mars?
Was there life on mars? According to John Brandenburg, a scientist associated with the Cydonia landforms on Mars, he thinks that there was enough life on the red planet at one time to suggest huge reserves of fossil fuels. "What Ive discovered is oil shale on Mars. That could make going to Mars the equivalent of purchasing 500 hundred new Alaskas." Bartholemews research traces back to 1965 when a geologist named Bartholemew Nagy published his findings on exotic meteorites known as carbonnaceous chondrites (abbreviated as C1) The extraterrestrial clay-like stones were filled with tarry matter called kerogen, a biological substance found on Earth that resembles oil shale.
The connecting link for Brandenburg, a NASA Advisory board member on reusable launch vehicles, was literature that he had unearthed regarding eight C1 metorites discovered in Africa, India, Asia and Europe. He began comparing notes. His findings were published in the Geophysical Research Letters journal in 1996. "What it means is that Mars was crawling with life and perhaps supported an Earthlike climate as recently as the Coal Age, maybe under 500 million years ago," Brandenburg postulates. Not surprisngly, he is also an enthusiastic proponent of colonization, "Mars suddenly becomes very easy to colonize. Rocket fuel, the production of plastics, food sources--Mars is a treasure and making it our 51st state should be our goal".
Harold McSween, a University of Tennessee geologist and a leading authority on meteorites has a different view and labels Brandeburgs findings as "ludicrous". adding that the meteorites are most likely left over from primitive debris from the formation of the universe. "It goes against how we think meteorites are formed. Its not as controversial as the Face, but its. . .so implausible that most people have ignored it."
Brandenburg who seems to interweave social theory into his radical assertion compares his findings with the crumbling of the Berlin Wall. "When the wall fell, it only seemed to take a few days, but it had been crumbling for decades because it was built on a flawed premise".
Turning to contemporary geopolitical metaphors, Brandenburg likens Mars to the situation in the Middle East, "outside of Jerusalem, Mars is the most political piece of real estate in the solar system". Padding his controversial position he adds, maybe the only thing we can all agree on is that this Mars story is just going to get bigger and bigger."

Round Trip Ticket To Cydonia
In a related story, Professor Carlo Rubbia, winner of the 1984 winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics has developed a system that would allow a spacecraft to make the Mars journey in 45 days by using nuclear power versus the current chemical propellent method.
"Nuclear energy on Earth is competing with many other alternatives and is not without problems, but in deep space travel it offers unique possibilities," says Rubbia, introducing his project during a recent conference at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory in Geneva.
With his so-called fission fragment rocket, Rubbia claims he has finally found the solution. Fission fragments are the direct products of a nuclear reaction in which a nucleus is split into fragments by a release of energy.
Rubbias engine is based on this process and on a key element americum-242. A synthetic chemical element somewhat similar to lead, americum was first derived from plutonium-239 in 1944.
The energy supplied by 1 gram of americum is about the same as 1 ton of the best chemical propellant. A few kilos of americum would be sufficient for a 120-million mile journey to mars for spacecraft and crew.
"It is a fascinating project" says Margherita Hack, director of the Inter-University Regional Center for Astrophysics and Cosmology in Trieste. Hack also believes in its feasability and Rubbias credibility, "he is a very competent and trustworthy person".
Rubbias light and simply structured spacecraft would allow round-trip travel to Mars in a maximum of five months, including the neccesary stay on the planet.
