Dieting impairs memory
Dieting- the deliberate attempt to restrict food intake for the sake of weight loss
- can become a major preoccupation in the lives of many women, despite recent evidence
that diets on the whole do not work and are often the triggers for binge eating.
Now a study from the Institute of Food Research in Reading, UK has found that dieters
display memory impairments and that the constant thoughts about food and eating are the
likely underlying cause.
A group of 69 women aged 18 to 35 years were given extensive tests and a
"significantly smaller working memory span" was found in the women who were
current dieters compared with non-dieters, suggesting it is actual dieting behaviour and
the associated psychological stresses which affects memory.
The extent of memory impairment was also significantly related to their self-reported
"desire to eat". Another good reason not to embark on a diet but to eat healthy
meals and exercise regularly.

Tea & Your Health

compelling case for the health benefits of tea, thanks to its abundant supply of
antioxidants. At the recent International Symposium on Tea and Health held in Sydney,
Australia in May 1998, the findings of the latest research on tea were presented.
