Ruary James Allen

I was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on September 14, 1967. In 1985 I moved to historic St. Andrews to study geology but I ended up majoring in extracurricular activities. Then I spent a year working on North Sea oil rigs. Since 1991 my home has been in the vibrant, diverse community of Oakland, California where I live with a cool wife and three shamans who are currently manifesting as cats in this dimension. I drew a lot of crazy stuff as a boy but puberty and social pressures distracted me from my calling. I rediscovered art while doodling in school notebooks and a lot of my early work I class as neodoodlism - letting the hand and mind flow.

Process of Atoms

My paintings have been shown at numerous galleries, juried art fairs, festivals and events in northern California and Oregon. My art has also been published in Creation Spirituality Magazine, on the cover of Psychic Reader, on flyers for Burning Man and in other hip places. I organized two successful shows for Oakland artists at former California governor Jerry Brown's "We The People" Community Center in Oakland (before he became Oakland's mayor, fortunately), and generally like to keep stirring the social stew where I can.

In my art, I approach metaphysical realities through myth and visual analogy. The imagery has been influenced by Celtic, eastern, ancient and modern traditions. Attempting to blend these with my own idiosyncratic vision, I like to produce art that simultaneously deals with personal, social, ecological, and spiritual themes. I aim to make even the most difficult subject matter beautiful. I hope that my art may serve as a portal, enabling people to deepen their appreciation of the world and themselves.
