Title: Future Tropic
Label: Om Records
Format: CD
Soundbyte: from Polyrhythms
These deep, instrumental soundtracks create a tropical, tribal atmosphere. Produced by OM's Chris Smith aka DJ Fluid, Future Tropic is a captivating combination of Afro-Cuban soul with the twist of electronics brought on by a menagerie of talent rockin' the bass, drums, guitar and FX. Watch out for the tracks featuring the bright and deep song of Lianna Young: "Move It Out" and "Don't Stop Dreaming." Songs that made me shake: "Polyrhythms" and "Inner Space Sontana." Ms.E!

Title: Artifex / Case One
Label: Secret Operations / Svek
Format: CD
Soundbyte: from Artifex
It's not an easy task to pick just one track off this compilation to share with you, but Boon's piece sticks out. Not just on Seba's Case One comp off his upstart label Secret Operations under the Svek umbrella, but in the world of Drum & Bass. This is truly an original-sounding track from this little-known artist. Short but sweet, this track's deep and progressive in its sound writing style. The track starts somewhat esoteric, then suddenly hits hard and rolls out, carried from hit to hit by its ever-so-heavy bassline. Not hard: HEAVY. Sit back and ride this one out and you'll thank me later. Gabe Real

Artist: Bows
Title: Blush
Label: Beggars Banquet / Too Pure
Format: CD
As a reviewer, every now and then a disc comes along with the spirit of the little record that could. I want to champion it, knowing that the major label behind it usually has about a two weeks worth of promotional funds set aside for it--maybe a 1/4 page ad in XLR8R and that's about it. Light the tiny fuse and hope it catches fire. Blush by Bows is one of those releases. Fronted by Luke Sutherland (formerly of Long Fin Killie), Bows comes on like the latest incarnation of Massive Attack, with lush grooves and soulful coos, especially from Signe Hoirup Willie-Jorgensen on the opening stunner, "Big Wings". And Sutherland himself isn't above matching sampled strings with downbeats and breakbeats with hearts beating on sleeves to create dance music that's--get this: emotional! And not without humor as he slips the occasional ironic blipvert into the mix, poking fun at his own artistic endeavors, which on Blush are formidable, duly recognized and noted. R. Phoenix

Artist: Cheb i Sabbah
Title: Shri Durga Remixes
Label: Six Degrees Records
Format: 12"
On this platter, Asian Underground artists remix urban ragas from Cheb i Sabbah's CD, Shri Durga. Transglobal Underground do a mix of "Kese Kese" on Side A, which also contains the State of Bengal mix of "Shri Durga." Side B has the Beast from Asia mix of "Kese Kese" by Indian dance music phenom, Bally Sagoo, plus the album version of "Ganga Dev." The latter shows how well drum & bass rhythms complement Indian music. The new versions continue the bent of Shri Durga, which has classical Northern Indian and Pakistani musicians play along with the elaborate loops that Cheb i Sabbah creates. Since he makes his natural flow towards world music clear, as a long-time DJ and producer, the groundwork has been laid for these remixers to feel the music, especially used to bringing traditional and modern sounds together. Title: Motion
Label: Ninja Tune
Format: CD
Soundbyte: from Ode to the Big Sea
Check the future jazz fusion overflowing with a chilled downtempo beat...from Ninja Tune's Jason Swinscone and his 6-piece ensemble of piano, sax, trumpet, flegelhorn, bass, and drums. His work with Tune includes tracks from the Diablus EP, 'Channel 1 Suite," "Ode to the Big Sea" and "Ninja Cuts--Funkungfusion." The band's club night "Loop" in London fuses music and visions by inviting guest producers/DJs to chose a film to re-score live!! How dope is that...once again, the Ninja Tune camp taking it to extremes with absolute class. Ms.E!

Title: 10110101 = (Rec + Play)
Label: Caipirinha Music
Format: CD
Soundbyte: from
Tweak the electro beat..sounds of straight up technology, sounds of creation. Twists and breaks, screeshes and sirens. Music from within the sounds out of static...Datach'i, 22-year-old New Yorker Joseph Fraioli has garnered acclaim with his release hyper-tech-gabber-break-neck music. Challenging listening for those who are used to one consistent style throughout an album. Fantastic for the schitzophrenic! "VCR Powered Carcass," "Take Off Your Face," "XORA + B (10110101 = You and Me) 13," and "Dizzy Fizz" are some names of tracks that give you an idea of how far-reaching and captivating these compositions are. Title: The Oakland Drum and Bass Experiment
Label: Deep Fat Fried
Format: CD EP
Fast mechanized jungle on the tech side. Less about ruff basslines, more about shock therapy mantra bizness to provide you with an intro to the Oakland realm of bizarre elements, mixed with automaton impulses. "Ride Da Riddim" repeats a ragga vocal, contrasted by industrial-strength breaks, but no cliche subs here. Zing is the word, and Godzilla screams to light the skyline. "Red Night Blue Night" puts electro effects on a human beatbox, looping, spitting it out on top of drilled spasms. Here and there, spacy atmospherics provide relief from the exhausting ride. "Old Man Witherspoon" tunes into an apocalyptic view with dogs howling and barking in the far background. The intensity of this piece lets up more than in the previous one, but some low-end presence pushes the hard parts to another level. At first, the foreground fills with two-step, kept interesting by varied juggling, plus the spare keyboard sample. Just as spooky laughter creates humor on the Scooby-Doo tip, beats start skipping all over, underlined with heavy bass at about level 2, before resting again in the groove, and winding down until only keyboard, then lonely crickets. "My Life Has Value" hammers quick like a metronome. The frustrated vocal insists, "My life has value . . . I'm a human being, " but it takes a second to figure out what he says, having been all chopped up; an ironic statement when juxtaposed with the military marching rhythm, and synthetic machine sounds. This one could be Einstursende Neubaten in a parallel universe.Sophia

Artist: DJ Craze
Title: Crazee Music
Label: Bomb Hip Hop
Format: CD/2 piece vinyl
Soundbyte: from Miami International Break
Entering the new millenium as the 2-time World DMC Turntablist Champion is no small feat! Craze is a wizard of cuts and scratches and the Bomb Hip Hop crew out of San Francisco rings in the occasion with the release of this double-trouble mixdown. This scratch master from Florida teamed up with his boys DJ Infamous and DJ Slice to bring on this classic collection of new breaks & beats for all the true freaks. You really get the vibe of what wiseguys these young kings are, they've got a wacky sense of humor. This disc is not wall-to-wall scratching which is a plus in my book--that can get so annoying! Grab this one for your collector's set, it's already a classic. Ms.E!

Title: File Under Futurism
Label: Caipirinha Music, USA
Format: CD
Soundbyte: from
Fast forward through the fire wire of post-modern apocaliptic culture...a menagerie of electrostatic sounds with the hummmmm of the machine, the clash of ideas, people, earth. Futurism...we are living it. DJ Spooky, That Subliminal Kid a.k.a. Paul D. Miller and the Freight Elevator Quartet (R. Luke DuBois, Paul Feuer, Rachael Finn and Stephen Krieger) twisted opposing textures of urban ambience and intellect with such songs entitled "bring me my mental health," "downtempo manifesto," "infrared," "the revolution will be streamed" and "experimental asynchronicity." The flair of hard-edged acoustics with hip hop rhymes and moody melodies make this a unique sound excursion for those cyber-psychonauts who dare to dive in... Ms.E!

Label: Ninja Tune
Format: CD
Soundbyte: from My Favorite Letter
Runnin' hip hop breaks...fans of beats and rhymes...this one's for you! The man Vadim is on the move, as heralded by his camp at Ninja Tune. A Russian ex-pat who's 1995 releases "Abstract Hallucinogenic Gases" and "Headz Ain't Ready" on his own imprint Jazz Fudge set the pace for collaborations with Ninja. By the time first album USSR Repertoire was released later that same year, he was tuning into the talents of an array of vocalists and the world was tuning into him. Collaborations with Japanese mixmaster DJ Krust, Kid Koala and The Herbaliser kicked off his reign in the Orient. "Life from the Other Side" features Iriscience from the Dialated Peoples, Swollen Members from the Rocksteady Crew, Sarah Jones, Prime Cuts, First Rate from the Scratch Perverts Blade and Killer Kela. Check thsee funky rhythms, and watch out for Vadim's track with Babu and Iriscience scheduled to appear on the Vianna Peace Summit's Culture of Peace compilation, appearing alongside Peter Gabriel, Pink Floyd, Queen and Yoko Ono. Artist: DRC
Title: Soul Reflection EP
Label: Twin Soul Productions
Format: VINYL 12"
DJ DRC lays it on full-throttle with her debut release featuring tracks "Lost Culture," "Change" and "Inside Out." This realm of breaks & bass will set you to lift-off with tight alignment of beats, the kickin sub-bass and funky vocal tweaks. DRC has electrified dance gatherings across the world. Based in San Francisco throughout the Nineties, she got her first gig in 1992 from DJ Downtown Donna at a club called Faster Pussycat. The narrative of her inspiration through years of mastering the vibe for the dancefloor comes out in these tracks. It is Ecstasy. The progression of her music merges styles of technootranceoacidojungle--you name it! You can't pin her down...she's gonna take you way beyond any expectations. Much love & respect to this lady, a pioneer in electronic music and an inspiration to me. Ms.E!

Title: Part One
Label: Sirkus
Format: 2 X 12"
Soundbyte: from Biophonic
There must be a bit of the '80s in the English air. Those anolog synth sounds seem to be the rage among the upper class of the Drum & Bass producers and none done better than these two masters, Wax Doctor and Alex Reese! These old pros not only bring back that poppy synth sound but also the true songsmanship of that musically emotional era. These songs are not "tracks" but are more compositions; communications of an emotion. "Blue Skies" and "Biophonic" open up the album in the most open-armed way an armless record could--through the heart. Acid synth and cool female vocals. Taking a past approach to new music should not be seen as a regression but as a progression of a music that is actually a canvas on which to paint an infinite picture of where we came from and where were going. "Track 7" and "The Theme": ground-breaking breakbeat. "Rapier" and "Event Horizon," "Like The Sun" and "Track 7 (remix)." This is a step in a new direction. One which will allow for the continuance of our music. Thank You Wax Doctor and Alex Reese. Gabe Real

Title: Ad Finit
Label: D'urban Poison Records
Format: CD
Brace yourself for "The Total Destruction + Dissection of Breaks + Beats." Kris Bonez brings forth the premier release of Tricky's new label, Durban Poison, with help from MC Killerman Archer, Scotty, and Chilly Phatz. Together they compose the experience of survival through hollow times. Previously morphed from the early jungle and big beat styles, their music has evolved into dangeous breaks, and they've unleashed it on an unsuspecting populace, rife with screams and blood-curdling cackles. Still, Bonez exhibits gorgeous ability on keyboards, and includes opera vocals on the title track. Standout tracks: "50,000 What's" serious neck popping tribute, and a booming version of Gil Scott Heron's "The Genaside Will Not Be Televised." Check out the amazing graphic art, too. Sophia

Artist: Ming & FS
Title: Hell's Kitchen
Label: Om Records
Format: CD
This latest excursion through the Brooklyn flava from Ming & FS takes their work a step further. Let me explain. These guys are known to personify B-Boy Scratch Junglism, incorporating lots of hip-hop. Hell's Kitchen has plenty of that, and a varied selection of MC's to boot, but there's also beautiful jazzy licks and even an atmospheric track ("80 Watt Parker"); not to mention both of the boys running up album credits such as acoustic bass, electric piano, moog, drum kit, synth, and of course, turntables. "Brain Dead Amphibian Twins" is the most trippy part, throwing in Ming's thrash guitar alongside booming 909 basstones; "Rock Higher" provides the most energetic, almost hardcore vibe on the album, and in many other places, the juxtaposition between crazy turntablism and sweet soul groove displays their talent for originality (e.g. "Bonus Round"). On "Kings County feat. M'stro Manny," the maestro phrases it well: "Part of it's slum, part of it's ghetto, part of it's suburban, part of it's meadow. Part of it's Peace and part of it's concrete jungle but on the whole it's mellow."Sophia

Title: Sweet Changes
Label: Good Looking Records #36
Format: 12"
Soundbyte: from Sweet Changes
Tokyo tops M.Shimizu as Mokoto give the Good Looking organization 100% jazzy dancefloor filler, no question about it. The "boom bap" of its rhythm is sure to do the job. As this track develops, a metallic, underwater type of hammering sound chisels away at the foundation to eventually unleash this song's true intention--a jazzy disco thing with full-on Rhodes flare, bassline straight from the '70s funk scene. A washy, stretched-out vocal carries across the top lifting you higher than you might have thought you could go.... I can't stop dancing long enough to write. Enough said. Gabe Real

Title: View Of Life
Label: Looking Good Records #26
Format: 12"
Soundbyte: from View of Life
Died and gone to heaven ? No, your just listening to View of Life , Moonchilds latest gift to us via "the" label Looking Good. Not that if you had died while or shortly after listening to this track would it be a bad thing. One might certainly feel comfortable with death and after life after having heard this music. S.Murrell and S.Kite have given us less close to dying the cool and comfortable vision of what's to come... echoing silky twinkling harps, cascading waterfallish sounds of the eternal rhythm of life, and even some cricket noise. Their snare hits are hard and their bass line driving enough for the dance floor. And if you like this material then check out their down beat tracks on the Good Looking sister label Cookin'.... This is Gabe Real just this side of the after-world.

Artist: Panacea
Title: Phoenix Metabolism
Label: Position Chrome
Format: CD
Panacea scares himself and us once again with Phoenix Metabolism. Violence, perverseness, and suspense all get rolled into a nasty package, and shot out into a future gone mad; half concept album, half insane asylum, padded out with German telephone conversations and answering machine snippets. Panacea only presents four jungle tracks, of which "Sunburst" and Firezones" pound with the most haunting and unrelenting aggressiveness. The title track turns breaks inside out, and farts itself through your speakers. The rest of the tracks, such as "Battlestations feat. Rant & the Redeemer" and "Wahreir Oder Fiktion feat. Ronin" put all known elements of breaks and hip hop through the fire until they come out entirely reconstituted on the other side, leaving your ears ringing with laser blast effects. "Gunrunner feat. Rant" performs audio visual channeling of processes where "the mind manifests itself into a series of dramatic flash effects," while "Heat Seekers feat. Rant" could be about missiles from the Dark Side, as Rant repeats the phrase, "the 2 titanical/ monster madness mechanical/ outcasted angels/ coming at different angles." Expect the ruff stuff, if you think you are ready. Sophia

Title: Meridian
Label: Nu Directions
Format: 12"
Soundbyte: from Meridian
My main man in England DJ Tricksta has done it. He's broken out of the stable and is off and running and his ability to pick the best atmospheric tunes will benefit us all. Pariah, you all remember from Urban Flavour, is Nu Directions first author. And what a tale he tells. "Can you imagine an extraterrestrial disc jockey..." well you don't have to this track is from another world and a being from no planet I know. Deep, atmospheric, and very futuristic. My mind melts at the first sounds off this plate and that's just the beginning. The track is layer after layer of thick juice from a thirsty imagination. The only way to describe it better is to LISTEN TO IT...and look for more to come from this Nu but very veteran label.Gabe Real

Title: Nomad
Label: Dub Plate
Format: unreleased
Soundbyte: from Nomad
This is the essence of why we do what we do. Unreleased material straight from heaven. M. Bolton is the type of producer who could have the world eating out of his hand and with this track it appears his hand is extended, open, and awaiting our bite. Nomad is a winding path of audible delights. PFM drops his classic "hollow" bongo sound with delay as an ethereal female vocal calls you in. As you might expect, once your in, he hits you in your ear hole with his relentlessly deep bass line. Deep but not over powering. His ability to seamlessley loop samples and sequences is entrancing. With stabs of haunting synth sounds he could turn deep house heads on their ear and engage every type of listener. Pretty Fine Music...Gabe Real

Title: Antenna
Label: Certificate 18 Electronic Projects
Format: CD
Soundbyte: from Microphone
Bits and pieces of elecrified melodies filter through the air towards my headspace. It's dark in the room and I am lulled by the reverb of these ambient breakbeat lullabies. Is it space static? Space jazz? A touch of industry funk....never losing the connection to my urban heaven. There is a twidle in the knobs, the clang of a zylaphone inside the story, inside the mystery...these deep sounds are not unlike the realm of rhythm I live by. There is a twist, the stripping away of certain textures that leaves a space for your imagination to fill. A chance to explore, if you take on the challenge. Inside the static there is a voice, a whisper transmitting through the infinite Antenna...Ms.E!

Title: 32¡ C and falling...
Label: Certificate 18
Format: 2 X 12"
Soundbyte: from Mass Mysterior
K: WOW! Where is D&B headed these days you might ask? Certificate18 shows us the light. The artist known as K explores exciting uses for hard-core sounds in the most "future is now" setting. Few artists can cojour up such fresh images using sound, but with his youth as his cardentals this Norweigen has got the vision for the future. The Lp starts with a slammin' electro breakbeat kinda hard-core dance floor killer Mass Mysterior . The flip a some what more excentric and in many ways braoder view of K's range production wise; One of a kind and Underwater. Tee Bee gets credit for turning us on to this one. The second twelve take any notion that D & B is static and explodes it into the future. Braking thru is a washy synth and vocal dream complamented by distortion yet to be heard and mad breakbeat programing. The B side of this plate are two tracks that each of which are truely unique approaches to the genre. You must have to be young (or act it) in life to create such new vision in music. A+ Gabe Real

Smooth intro glides into deep female vacals with a dark disturbed bassline trembling in. The first 12" also gives us the wicked Usual Suspects instrumental mix. These are not your usaual soul numbers I've seen Aspect put out. Congas and precusion backed by evil (in a good way)bass distortion. Ms.Escoffery suggests 'Let Go' as you kling to every note. Source Direct, my remixer of the year, offer a heavy duty runnin' verion. Title: Be Smiley With The Medicine Man
Label: Men Are Pigs Music
Format: CD
Here's a sneak peek at Scintilla, a new collaboration between San Francisco-based producer/bass player, Todd Christiansen, and Brighton-based beat freak, Stuart Lloyd. Scintilla's release, Be Smiley With The Medicine Man, offers an amusing jaunt through Funland, dancing to light-hearted breaks. Arranged with tinkling upper-octave keys, bell tones, trumpet, the soul scat vocals of Alicia Esqueda ("Positivity," and "Misty Morning Romp"), electric guitar twangs, and trippy washes, this offering provides music to prep you for a night out parading on the town. Janine Turner's vocals on "Mainline the Groove" also add sweet freeform vibrations to the disc. The music may go from funky to psychadelic, but rest assured that you can skip along to a skankin' dancefloor shuffle anytime you put this on, and the Piper will lead you to Never Never Land. Sophia

Format: 2xCD
Soundbyte: from The Secret Arrival ~ Outlands Two
As the sun sets in the distant horizon, you close your eyes and reflect on the day-drifting with the wind, floating to a higher state, ascending into the heavens. As your spirit revels in the beauty of nature and life, you slowly descend onto a dusty mesa, taking a place in front of a small crackling fire across from your guide, who is sitting on a woven rug. You watch as the smoke spirals into the night sky, dancing with the sparks of the fire, creating images from your imagination. The wind whispers in your ear, beckoning you to fly again. Your guide smiles and you hear the words; The answer you seek is always inside, just close your eyes. As you close your eyes, you can feel the rhythm of your heart beating slowly with each breath. You open your eyes and realize that you have been comfortably relaxing on your sofa for the last two hours. This may be your journey or mine; either way, this 2xCD set is guaranteed to take you to another realm or at least take the edge off of any stress filled day. Wunjo

DJ Raymond Roker lays down a live mix for the first installment of the Om Records "Century-Ending Breakbeat" series, Altered States of Drum & Bass. Jonny L's "Uneasy" undercuts with deep jabs and sarcastic samples, sliding into moody "Mind Weaver," by Source Direct. Other purveyors of the jungle vibe include Freestyles (DJ Hype), Dylan, DJ Abstract, and the anthemic Makai. The selection reflects tracks played at Science in late '99, with a DJ's expression of individuality, dropping out the bass in parts, interjecting outside beats -- all the necessary stuff. Sophia

Title: Red, Hot And Lisbon : Onda Sonora
Label: Bar None
Format: CD
It's an unfortunate, yet ironic admission that a rapacious and communally devastating virus such as AIDS has produced a mutant strain of excellent compilations in the Red, Hot series. The latest, Red, Hot and Lisbon; Onda Sonora (which roughly translates into "sound wave") is no exception--focusing on the Portuguese musical heritage and fusing it with artists from outside the genre graphic lines. David Byrne meets his doppleganger in Caetano Veloso on the opening track. Siementara collide with DJ Soulslinger; Spooky teams with Vinicius; Suso Saiz remixes Madredeus--you get the picture. Brazil has always been the dominant voice in Portuguese Music, but on "Onda Sonora" lesser known, yet equally gifted Lisbon, Mozambique and Cape Verde based artists such as Antonio Chaina, Delfins and To Ricciardi get a chance to be heard amongst the dazzling Diaspora of the party Columbus crashed. Support a good cause and attune to the seductive sound waves converging on "Red, Hot and Lisbon."

You could close your eyes while listening to this recordand easily imagine youselfin a Filmore jazz club circa 1979. Can you dig it ? Can you hear soul, can you actually taste a beat? If so this is it! Artemis and Keleidoscope offer up the first 12" of this double pack. Two straight up funk action. Gritty, live, and danceable this is the working class of dance music. "It's time to go to work" is the vocal sample Kaleidoscpoe uses in "The Bite". These first two tracks use a full range of jazz and funk instrumentation. The second 12" features D&B artists Moonchild who instantly turn you into butter as they lead you into the ambient dub world of "Greensand". At this point it seems that more producers are turning to new labels to outlet their musical expressions outside any specific genre. Finally K-Scope powers home a live feeling jam. "Diferent Places "sounds like United Future Oranization in a Good Looking Organization studio post 2000. This isthe finest downtempo any has offered us in a lond time. Artist: Wimme
Title: Gierran
Label: Northside
Format: CD
We live in a culture that's immersed in trance. Entranced we sit in front of boxes that occasionally stare back and reflect a cathode code of soul stealing proportions. We swirl in the midst of collective trance and somnambulistic consensus rituals--shopping, public schools, inured emotional response to pre-meditated and orchestrated events that we than weakly label as "history." And then there's the trance we induce in order to break the spell of public hypnosis. Trance induction is timeless, trance induction is now. On Gierran, Finnish Sami vocalist, Wimme takes the ancient style of singing known as "Yoiking" and seductively weaves it together with deep electroaccoustic layers of haunting timelessness. This is serious journey music that incorporates longing, desire, terror and ecstasy. Oboes dance in and out of the percolating rhythms and echoes of ancient orders where chaos was courted as an elemental companion, not to be controlled or contained swirl through the mix. The universality of Wimme's vocal intonations conjures up both Native American and African affiliations of spirit. Snap out of the trance and listen! Robert Phoenix
