BEAM 2.1 / Label Profile / Waveform

WAVEFORM:
Transitions in Atmosphere
by Wunjo

There are many reasons on why things begin, take shape and carve out a place in life. Every beginning has its story of origin, which leads into the story itself as it develops a history. And as with every story, you will find that it too has its own component–the storyteller. In addition, as with any good story and its storyteller, there needs to be a few more components to add depth to what is being told. To add depth to any story, a specific setting or environment needs to be created. One way of doing so is by adding music, or a "soundtrack" if you will, to the story. Since I can only give a humble opinion, I will leave it up to the creators themselves to spin a yarn and give you insight to one of my favorite music labels–WAVEFORM.

The WAVEFORM label began in the summer of '93, when a being from England's Beyond label (inventors of the term "Ambient Dub") visited the UFO-filled canyons of Sedona, Arizona. He mind-melded with a radio DJ who was also exploring new ambient and midtempo experimental electronic music from England and Europe.

Twenty minutes later, WAVEFORM was born. Our first release came to market with national distribution through the Navarre Corporation http://www.navarre.com in May of 1994–the highly-praised compilation of UK artists known as ONE A.D. (volume one ambient dub)" followed soon thereafter by Birmingham, England's HIA, the Higher Intelligence Agency and their debut release, COLOURFORM.

In 1995, the WAVEFORM catalog grew with our biggest selling title and follow-up compilation, TWO A.D. (volume two ambient dub), Tuu's ancient and atmospheric, ALL OUR ANCESTORS," Loop Guru's cross-cultural, worldly and energetic "DUNIYA" (the intrinsic passion of mysterious joy), and A Positive Life's, classic synth masterpiece, "SYNAESTHETIC."

We stayed busy in 1996 with four new releases including the third and final chapter in the A.D. compilation series, THREE A.D. as well as Sounds from the Ground's "KIN" and the USA release of the Higher Intelligence Agency's second full album, FREEFLOATER, plus the totally chilled trip-hop and acid jazz-tinged compilation, FROSTY. In 1997, we slowed down a bit and watched the titanic music industry rearrange its deck chairs, moved around some and still found time to bring out one of the most important albums of the year, SLUMBERLAND a dreamy, atmospheric compilation designed for sensual pleasures. If you're looking for perhaps the all time best ever album for making love, not war, slum, slum, Slumberland receives our vote!

From Austin in 1998 we served up a full plate of four new releases. Those would be: NOMADIC IMPRESSIONS by Open Canvas, ancient cross-cultural electronic music inspired by the middle east; ANCIENT ALIEN, our first soundtrack album from the eye popping Sony Music Video of the same name; our dubbiest compilation ever, EARTHJUICE,–freshly squeezed electromagnetic dub from the UK and Germany and ZERO ONE by ZerO One, calculated adventures for intellectual listening. We also began offering direct, secure, online ordering from our site, for customers worldwide.

In March of 1999 we welcomed the blissed-out beatz of URCHIN by the UK duo Urchin and then our wanderlust took hold once more and we found ourselves back in Cali again, this time along the coast of San Diego. Our first release from the land of surf and sun, in mid September, turned out to also be our first foray into vocalese. It's called LIQUID ZEN by San Antonio's Liquid Zen–an electronic flavored exercise in angst-tinged vocals and instrumentals.

Time marches forever forward and Y2K promises to be our most prolific year ever, already underway with prerelease direct sales of CHEERY our benefit Holiday/Christmas album! Strike a match with SERIOUS SMOKERS–the dubby best of Ras Command and rest those droopy eyelids to the incredibly swanky trumpet and electronics breakbeat album from Japan's Kozo–PLANNED PENETRATION. Still in Y2K, we'll have a second, soulful Sounds From the Ground release called TERRA FIRMA, a second spicey, energetic Open Canvas titled INDUMANI, a second episode of "SLUMBERLAND," a second ZerO One; and if we can figure out a way to go without sleep, perhaps a second volume of EARTHJUICE, a reformulated ONE A.D. and who knows what else?!? Stay tuned!

And who works so hard to bring you our unique brand of "exotic electronica" from the UK, Europe, Japan and right here in the ole U-S-S-A? Our entrepenurial explorers include that barleygreen bottle washer Forest, Brian (tech head), the suave and handsome Pierre (check out his great band Rilo Kiley http://www.rilokiley.com, the lively Sandee and the recently departed Dan-O, with special thanks to DJ Free at Soulfood Media http://www.soulfoodmedia.com.

In addition to providing an excellent selection of music for its audience, WAVEFORM connects their listeners with their "Musical Starstreams" radio show. It seems that this story continues to get better and has the "soundtrack" to prove it. If you are an avid collector of ambient, ambient dub or any down-tempo music, then you should definitely browse over to this site. If you are new to the world of ambient, ambient dub or down-tempo music, then WAVEFORM is the best place to begin familiarizing yourself with the various styles of ambient music. Old and new alike, collectors, critics and everyone in between will benefit from the large catalog of music, creatively ranging from every angle, aspect and perspective in the world of "Ambient Dub" music.

There are many reasons on why things begin, take shape and carve out a place in life. Every beginning does have its story of origin, which helps define itself to the world. The story itself has been developed and history has been made. It’s up to you to continue writing more chapters for this story to continue, for I am only one storyteller and there are many more stories to be told. See if the tale is true! Immerse yourself in the realm of beautifully crafted compositions with stories of their own. Go on, you’ll see–it’s a pretty amazing world of music.
