SUN RA RESEARCH

John Hinds in motion

Sun Ra Research (SRR) 'zine chronicles conversations and interviews with Sun Ra, Arkestra members and others associated with Sun Ra, and is created and maintained by John and Peter Hinds. SRR also has a website featuring excerpts and images from their publication. Besides their work on SRR, the Hinds’ like to capture their favorite DJs on video and in photos around the San Francisco Bay Area. To complete their endeavors in dedication to music, the two siblings also make their own compositions, released under Hinds Brothers. You can read the Radio-V review of SRR’s latest CD entitled The Brilliant Sounds.

Here is a piece written by John and Peter Hinds, with soundbytes also by them:

Sun Ra: composer, arranger, pianist, electronic music pioneers, bandleader and philosopher.

Since the 1940s, Sun Ra has been one of the leaders in the use of electronic keyboards in music. Sarting with the Solovox, an electronic keyboard that attached to the piano, Sun Ra has been an explorer of electronic sounds among other things. And since the ‘40s, Sun Ra has been speaking to humanity to prepare themselves for the space age. Now, some fifty years later and six years after leaving the planet, Sun Ra’s music and philosophy still enlighten and inspire those who know of him and those who are discovering him.

Sun Ra’s ceaseless musical and total artistic integrity continues to inspire musicians around the world. Carl Craig (with Francisco Mora who played with Sun Ra’s Arkestra from 1974 to 1980) is one example of someone who’s musical direction Sun Ra has influences in the last several years.

For those interested, several compositions featuring Sun Ra’s electronic keyboards are illuminating: Space Probe, The Cosmic Explorer and Disco 3000 are pieces that all should check out.

“This is another age and you [are] part of the Cosmos and you’ve been a part of it all this time. You [are] citizens of the Cosmos; Citizens of the Omniverse and the Universe. But you’ve just been Earthminded all this time. But the Cosmos does not care that if you don’t do nothing, ‘cause ignorance of the law is no excuse for you and therefore they are not even going to think about your enslavement and your being true to governments or armies. They don’t care ‘cause they haven’t been in it and they expect you to stand on your feet and be the man you are supposed to now, without any instructions. And you can’t do it unless your spirit stands up and forgets you got a body ‘cause ain’t none of your body, no way. Belongs to your mother and father and you done have no body. You have no body. You just have a spirit. That belongs to you. So then if you cater to your body, you only cater to something that ain’t nothing but something of the reproduction system that just a copy. And reproductions are not considered by the cosmos. Only something that’s natural and creative. Yes, but you do not expect the creator to respect a reproduction? ‘Cause he never made a reproduction. Man makes that. So then you are made. You just a manmade product and you came here through man and woman. In other words: You were manufactured. You come here through man. So then you’re just a manufactered product. Now if you are going to use your spirit, of course you are not manufactured--you’re womanfactured. You are a spirit. And the Creator expect you to stand up and be you. And he’s not going to pay no attention if you haven’t been educated. He does not care. If you sick or crippled or handicapped he does not care. He expect you to stand up and be the spirit he created and you be there and then you can stand before him unshamed.”

Conversation with Robert Moog about Sun Ra
“What is the power of your ship? Music. Space is the place, in all of us.... Let's all make cosmic music!”
