BEAM 2.1 / Innerviews / Gilles

GILLES PETERSON

Watch a video interview.

As a club DJ, Gilles Peterson established a reputation for bouncing around musical categories from soul to jazz to hip hop playing Sunday afternoon sessions at Dingwalls in Camden. On the FM broadcast tip, he started up on pirate stations in the ’80s, eventually moving on to legit stations. Nevertheless he maintained the independent mentality of free music, getting fired from Jazz FM for playing a set of songs that were banned for potentially being able to stir up anti-war sentiment (one of which was “Bomb the Bass”).

The best way his audience connects with his vibe is still through radio. You can hear one of his radio shows on Radio London (2 or 3 hour segments weekly since 1987.) Peterson’s weekly radio show on BBC Radio1, called GP Worldwide, is also carried on Kiss FM London, Radio Mafia (Finland), Radio Nova (Paris), Coleur 3 (Switzerland), Acik Radyo (Istanbul), Shibuya FM (Tokyo), Radio Montecarlo (Italy), Radio X (Frankfurt), B92 (Belgrade), Pavli 9 (Zagreb), WXPN Chicago, Pseudo Internet, Gaia Live and DJ Index. GPWW archives has interviews with the likes of Sun Ra, Daft Punk, Courtney Pine, Talvin Singh, Shri, LTJ Bukem, Erykah Badu, Lee Scratch Perry, Portishead, and Photek.

One of his many accomplishments was establishing his own label to release quality music from all classes. Excerpting from the Talkin Loud website, here is a list of his other Label releases and records: “1988: Gilles and some associates introduced Acid Jazz, the label, the compilation and the movement, into the scene. At the same time Gilles was putting successful compilations like the JazzJuice series out through Streetsound and selections for Blue Note & Prestige. A whole industry of compilations followed from then. (He’s still doing it: 21st Century Soul, Talking Jazz 3 and Brazilica Compilations out on Talkin Loud now).”

Recommended: Journey By DJs Compilation The Desert Island Mix (also featuring Norman Jay), from the V2 label.

Peterson released the INCredible Sound Of Gilles Peterson (CD & Triple Vinyl) on the INCredilbe label, selecting from his ample record collection, with varied styles such as hip hop, leftfield, Latin, “Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will Follow” psychedelic funk, “grooving loungecore”--lotsa different tempos.
