Our Transparent Evolution By Pierre Levy
Most of the presenters at the Planetwork Conference have brought a message of darkness and a warning of the perils of technology, and about worsening ecological conditions as a result of technology. What is your perspective on this issue, and is there a brighter side of the story to be told?
I think that we are right if we are afraid because there are very real dangers. The biosphere is really threatened by our actions. But, I think that we are becoming increasingly aware of this situation. In general, knowledge grows at the same time, in the same proportion as power, the power of action. There is no distinction between action and knowledge. You know only if you have the power to do. There is no separation. It's a loop. It's a feedback loop: perception, action, perception, action. This is knowledge. Knowledge is in the loop: perception, action.

So, at the same time that we have this huge power, we also have this perception of what's happening, what we are doing, and we have this perception thanks to the media i.e., newspapers, books, radio, television, and of course the Internet. There is knowledge and transparency and communication and more and more we are becoming aware of what we are doing. Increasingly we are experiencing a transparency about the mechanisms that are doing evil things. When you put light on evil, evil cannot continue.
I think that in developing communication technology and the use, the free use of these new communication technologies, we have the potential to be conscious of what we are doing. If we are conscious collectively of what we are doing, we can save the situation and we can arrive at another step, another phase of the evolution, of the global general evolution, and of the cultural evolution. We can arrive at our next stage: of humanity becoming adults.
