 DJ DAZEE ON THE SCENE
Bristol "Ruffneck" does up San Francisco.
DAZEE DAYS
The Queen of Bristol, representing the Ruffneck Ting
and Knowledge Magazine crews,
DJ Dazee comes to SF and Radio-V reporter dmarie documents their whirlwind trip of music
and cultural exchanges. Let the journey begin...
Thursday Oct. 15th, 3-6 PM, SFO
Bristol Ruffnecks land in SF: DJ/Producer Dazee of Ruffneck Ting and
Knowledge Magazine UK, alongside MC Jakes of Breakbeat Culture, arrives from LA with one
hour sleep. We hike to my car, smoke a spliff, tune in the dubwise selections, and drive
off to terrorize the neighborhood. Since this is their first trip to SF, I wonder what
they'll ask for first? A burrito, the Golden Gate, or maybe record shopping? I should have
known, they choose the latter and off we go to Compound Records. New beats are necessary; Dazee's been playing out of
the same crates for two weeks. Interestingly enough they find tracks they couldn't find
back home in the UK.
Thursday, 7-10 PM, China Basin
Loungin' Online: Toting new wax, brews, and gourmet burritos we venture off
to the Beta Lounge to party with
headz on-line. The Beta Lounge is a globally accessible chill room on the Internet,
broadcast from a warehouse space. The studio fills up with locals and the pre-party is
rolling. Viewers from around the globe all want to know, "Who is the hot lady DJ and
tight MC?" Jakes shouts out to the loungers on-line, as the dubplate pressure grows
stronger.
Thursday, 10PM-3AM, SoMa District
How does our Garden Grow? Enchanted by Spectr's Visual Junglism, and still
warm from our earlier mix-session, Dazee and Jakes immediately dig the atmosphere. Eklektic resident DJ Sage
steps up and rinses it out with her concrete skills. On their Bristol crusade, Dazee and
Jakes push it deeper into the Dazee Age. Before we know it the clock strikes two, the
lights are on, and no one will stop what they're doing! This SF debut is forced to
surrender to our city's Draconian curfew.
Friday Oct. 16th, 11PM-4AM, SoMa District
Won't Leave Them Hangin': Our space ship lands at 1015 Folsom, and our
decompression commences in the space called the Bassment. Dazee is asked to play right
away. Armed with two stiff drinks, she takes her trademark stance behind the decks and
digs in. Tonight she's dropping the bass and breaks to a new crowd. Three hours roll by
and Dazee inquires, "Who's on next?" Nobody, I reply. She shoots me a look of
disbelief. No way would she leave this dance floor hangin'. Now armed with water, she and
Jakes propell through the night until the plug is pulled.
Saturday Oct. 17th, 3-5PM, USF Campus
Radio Anthology: On route to the KUSF 90.3FM studios we tune in Future Breaks FM where a DJ
Dazee anthology is being transmitted. DJs Push, Arc Angel Gabe Real and Miss E are
dropping a bit of history to the Bay Area listeners about Bristol-based record labels
Ruffneck Ting, Breakbeat Culture and Tech Itch. We arrive and Jakes takes over the mic to
big up the SF crews. Dazee explains the old-school Bristol sound systems culture and
discusses the crew behind Knowledge drum 'n' bass magazine. She doesn't hesitate to rate
SF's drum 'n' bass culture high on the Stateside tip.
Saturday, 11PM-8AM, Sacramento
Smokin'! Beats that is: When we arrive at the "Repercussion"
all-jungle rave we see that it is in a climbing gym. There are caves and caverns
illuminating color and sounds. This is a non-smoking rave; the floor is made of shredded
tires. Time flies, it's 5AM, and Dazee steps off the decks. A girl barrels toward us,
"Damn," she acknowledges, "You're so off the hinges, you've got no front
door."
Sunday Oct. 18th, 11AM, SFO
Dazed but not Confused: As if in a time lapse, we're back at the airport. Dazee and
Jakes depart just as they arrived, with only one hour sleep. Silently I drive back to the
hood. In my mind a Dazee anthem rings clear as a bell, I smile. "Damn Right!"
Look out for the Kung
Fu Knowledge Tour staring DJ Dazee many others heading Stateside soon. Thanks to Dynasty Productions and Contagious
Musiq for making this tour possible. |
