Burning
Man 2000: Black Rock City, Nevada
August 28 - September 4
Black Rock Spaceport,
located on the Millennial Burning Man map at 3:45 and Head, was
a collaboration between Radio-V.com,
Anon Salon
and Peace Through
Technology Tour. The catalyst for the whole operation was
The Disc,
channeled by 3D animator/architect Keith McGowan with support
from artist Matt Dong (a.ka. DJ Donger). The 60-foot disc structure
was similar to the VGypt Pyramid that grounded last year's "Hourland"
theme camp (located on the other side of town at 8:15). We
had a small sound system in the Disc, and, although we came to
the playa with scant decorations in hand, a last minute addition
to our camp, Yanniv, had just come back from Bali with a crop
of very cool black light banners that fit perfectly in our space.
We rounded up a black light and some other lighting elements from
Anon Salon, and ZOUNDS, we had a quite groovy set and setting.
In previous
years, our camp was also the production center for the Community
Dance an official Burning Man project. Check out this video
from ComDance
I with Goa Gil. The second
Community Dance was larger (check the flyer)
, and the third (and
last?) went, well, perhaps over the top! The site of that
dance was marked by a lifesize cropcircle created by Landon Elmore
and friends. Check this never-before published aerial
photo. Joegh Bullock of Anon Salon helped organize the Burning
Man Fashion Show in years past, and did so again this year.
Black Rock Spaceport
was a modest but quite spirited psychedelic zone featuring downtempo
grooves during the day and dance music at night. Visitors enjoyed
hanging in our open space as well as inside
the disc, and the Anon
Salon Casbah offered a comfortable, sexy chillspace. We had
camels again this year, for one day, before the angry owner took
them back to Reno after complaints hurt his feelings. We weren't
sure why people were so upset about camels hanging out in the
desert.
A cool theme camp is
a community and ours seemed a big success in that department.
One of the secrets was the "heart" of our camp, the kitchen, overseen
by Kirsten
and Abby. Although we closed down early after TONS of great
vibes each night, we did go all night on Saturday - Burn night
- with an enhanced sound system. The Peace Through Technology
Tour and D7 provided large screens and projections for this final
interdimensional blast. Unfortunately, our schedule got severely
delayed and the trance music went until 8 am (vs. the planned
5 am), to the chagrin of our immediate neighbors (some of the
Gigsville gang, who staged a protest
later in the morning by parading through our camp with noisemakers).
The mellower vibrations didn't start until 8, and we played music
most of the day Sunday to appreciative visitors.
It was an amazing Burning
Man for all of us. Kind of like the Year 2000, including great
highs and difficult lows. But all in all, the highs far outshined
the lows, and we are ready to reinvent ourselves, again, in 2001!
